Der Klassiker begins, like all classics, in a final.

Munich, 1974. A home World Cup. Franz Beckenbauer lifts the trophy in a white and black ringer trim and the silhouette is so quietly right that fifty years later it has not aged a single day.

They called him the emperor but never for power. For poise. He played defence as though it were architecture. He moved through the game like a man who had nowhere to be and all the time in the world. He made restraint the most dangerous quality on the pitch. The cleanest player on the field is almost always the one who has already won.

That is the spirit this shirt is built on. And he was not alone in understanding it.

In the same country, in the same century, two other forces were saying the same thing in different languages.
